Rotary Club seeks donations of entertainment equipment for veterans

The Rotary Club seeks donations of entertainment equipment for the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Martinez. An earlier donation drive was such a morale booster that VA therapists asked for the club's help again.

Through Rotary Shares, residents may make donations of players for VHS tapes, DVDs and CDs. The VA also requests two flat screen TVs and many DVDs and CDs.

The donation drive is through Wednesday, July 15. Collections boxes are located in the parking lot entrance to Gateway Clubhouse and at the UPS Store in the Rossmoor Shopping Center.

Be sure to attach any cords that the equipment needs and instructions, if available. Putting it all into a large bag is a good way to keep it together for convenience and safety.

The VA Hospital offers rehabilitation, extended care and palliative care to men and women who served in the U.S. military from World War II to the present.

More than 100 veterans are hospitalized in Martinez. Many of these patients are socially isolated and can easily slip into depression. Boredom and depression slow healing both physically and emotionally.

The veterans were cheered by the earlier donations from Rossmoor. The hospital created libraries of the DVDs, CDs and video tapes. No more VHS tapes are requested, however it's hoped that several VHS tape players will be donated so patients can enjoy the tapes that they already have.

For information or help moving donations, call Nancy Flautt, Rotary president, at 943-1522; Anita King, project coordinator, at 934-1813; or Ken Miller, past Rotary president, at 256-9343.
