Community Club will hear about HIV care in Africa

Oakland's Dr. Robert Scott, an indefatigable provider of HIV care who travels to Africa on a regular basis, will be the Community Club's guest speaker on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 3 p.m. in the Fireside Room. A social hour will follow his talk.

Scott earned his bachelor's degree from Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa, and his doctorate of medicine from UC San Francisco. In 2005, Scott was the second recipient of UCSF's Community Service Award. He was cited for being “a wonderful example of a Bay Area community member committed to serving on both a local and global level.”

Scott is a Regent's Scholar of the University of California and has served as a clinical instructor at the medical schools at UCSF, UC Davis, and Stanford University. His practice locally served over 4,000 patients, over 400 of whom have the HIV virus. He is an elected board member of Project Open Hand, Families Created by Adoption and the HIV Trial Researchers, and chairs the AIDS Ministry Committee at Allen Temple Baptist Church in Oakland.

Scott was the first African-American physician to become licensed to practice in Zimbabwe, where he serves over 300 patients on his biannual visits. In addition to providing medical care, he delivers clothing and supplies from Allen Temple to children whose parents died of AIDS.
