Sixty-five vendors will sell handcrafted items at the Fall Bazaar Saturday

By Cathy Tallyn Staff writer

Lynn Guy's business card says it all: “I paint just about anything.”

In preparation for Saturday's Fall Bazaar, however, she's concentrating on terracotta pots, as well as glass bottles and jars.

Can you picture a pickle jar turned into a brightly colored vase? And, for those who will be in the Christmas mood - she's also working on bisque China ornaments.

Can you imagine the delight on a granddaughter's face when she sees her special, one-of-a-kind ornament?

Guy's large sun room/studio has plenty of clay pots and saucers, as well as bottles and jars in various sizes and stages of design.

“This is what I do - I paint stuff,” she said.

The things she creates can be functional or decorative. Much of it is painted in yellow, her favorite color. All of her things, however, are painted in vibrant colors, be they yellow, green, blue or red, or a combination thereof.

While a visitor might just see some flower pots with flowers painted on them, Guy envisions much more. A tiny, 2-1/2-inch high clay pot becomes something in which to put place cards at a fancy dinner party or toothpicks at a buffet table. Larger pots, of course, can be used as flower pots, as well as a container for kitchen tools.

All of her creations can be customized, depending on the use and the season, making them all that more special.

Guy has always enjoyed doing crafts. Before moving to Rossmoor from back East, she owned a candle shop. About three years ago, she got into painting clay pots, as well as glass bottles and jars. Her friends give her a constant supply of bottles in all shapes and sizes.

She sold a few things at the Rossmoor Flea Market. Encouraged by her success there, she decided to sign up for the bazaar. She'll be at one of the tables outside the Fireside Room at Gateway.

This year's bazaar drew 65 vendors who will sell marmalade, jellies, jams and bread, as well as afghans, jewelry, pottery, photos, books, gift baskets and toys, to name a few things.

Preparing from long distance

Jan Muller has been working via very long distance to get ready for the bazaar.

The Rossmoor resident has been in Israel, but that doesn't mean she's dropped the ball on the Fall Bazaar. Muller will sell tennis and golf jewelry, such as necklaces and pendants, for players to wear, as well as little pendants to affix to a golf or tennis bag.

“I'm really excited about it,” she said of the bazaar.

Janet Kinney has been working from Sonora. She will have portraits of friend's grandchildren and pets. Working from a digital image and using two special computer programs, Kinney is able to work magic with her computer. It looks as if the finished product was actually painted on canvas.

She agrees. “It looks like an oil painting.”

Although Kinney is a photographer, she prefers her clients give her a photo of their child or pet that they want the portrait of. That saves her time and effort since children and pets can be hard to photograph.

Kinney starts with a good, high resolution photo. Then she “paints” a portrait using two different computer programs. It can take up to eight hours to get the desired effect, she said. The result is dramatic - work that looks like it was painted on canvas.

The inspiration for Lynn Letteris' handiwork was an old towel.

She was playing in a tournament at another golf course and when she got to her assigned cart, she couldn't help but notice there was a towel covering the worn spot on the seat. Letteris thought she could do better and she did. The result is her quilted golf cart seat covers.

“This is easy,” she said, downplaying the amount of work that goes into each reversible seat cover that's easy to switch from cart to cart.

All of these artists are ready to sale their wares at the Fall Bazaar. See accompanying box listing all the vendors and where they will be located.
